Basingstoke Pumptrack

We were awarded the contract to develop a pump track at War Memorial Park in Basingstoke by Basingstoke and Deane County Council. The project was part of a wider scheme where other contractors were awarded the contracts to build a concrete skatepark and parkour area.

Construction access was shared with the other contractors with all materials imported on an aluminium trackway, protecting the sports fields that they crossed. Strong communication between contractors was paramount in order to ensure disruption was minimised to each of the works, particularly to time critical phases of the projects, such as asphalt laying and concrete pours.

The site area allocated to the project at tender stage was disconnected from the skatepark area. However, upon award of the contract, we liaised with the client and the appointed skatepark contractor to adjust the site area and designs, to allow for more connectivity in the design. This included a larger rest area with skateable asphalt embankments.

The design brief for the pump track itself was to focus on bikes, especially BMX, so this was accommodated in the design with deep bowls and high and steep berms. Multiple rollers of varying heights and spacing allowed for various gap and transfer options for riding the track. The track was finished with Velosolutions custom mix of smooth high grip asphalt, and many skaters use the track alongside the concrete skatepark when visiting the facility.

3 trees were removed as part of the project, including 2 partially dead trees identified for removal on safety grounds by B&DCC. We planted 8 trees to compensate for the trees removal.
