Chopwell Pumptrack

We were appointed by Friends of Chopwell Park to design and build a pump track to enhance the recreational offer at the park. The design was completed at tender stage, having consulted with some of the key users prior to submission.

The criteria agreed on for the design included a symmetrical track for racing and meet the criteria for the Red Bull Pump Track World Championship Qualifier as well as the inclusion of a beginner track. We produced designs for a 235m track with a 40m beginner track adjacent to it. The main track included multiple berms including 2 x triple berms and various roller combination features. Designs were developed through the planning stages of the project and drawings submitted for a formal planning application.

A level platform was bench cut into the hillside to form the foundations of the track. Water from land drains, intersecting the site, was managed effectively and diverted into a culvert and attenuation drainage system. Recycled aggregates were used to ensure that the environmental impact of the project was minimised.

The project was halted for 8 weeks due to the outbreak of Covid-19, with the site left in a safe and secure state. Once appropriate measures were put in place with regard to hand washing, social distancing, travel and staff accommodation the project resumed and completed to an extremely high standard. Safety lines were painted in different colours for the 2 separate tracks to allow riders to easily distinguish between them.
