Fort William Pumptrack
Velosolutions was commissioned by the Lochaber Wheeled Sports Society, a local community group and registered charity, to design and build the Fort William Bike Park. The project aimed to create a world-class facility for teaching bike skills, promoting recreational wheeled sports, and providing inclusive facilities for the local community. Velosolutions designed a 265m pump track, an 85m all-ability track, and an adjacent skate park. Collaboration with local riders and Lochaber High School students informed the advanced features of the pump track, including a curved jump line.
The all-ability track, a concept by Velosolutions, was designed in consultation with Cycling Scotland and Wheels For All to accommodate adaptive bikes. It features low-level rollers and gently cambered corners, catering to a wide range of riders, including those on adaptive bikes, tricycles, and wheelchairs. The track serves as a practice ground for balance bikes, children, and beginners, promoting skill development and confidence-building.
The Fort William Bike Park's grand opening coincided with the Cycling World Championships and the Downhill Mountain Bike event hosted by the town. Strategically located adjacent to Lochaber High School and at the end of the cycleway to Nevis Range, the park provides easy access to local MTB trails. Its proximity to various off-road routes positions it as a central and accessible destination for biking enthusiasts of all levels.
